Last Friday, the traditional Cavigal evening took place at the Ruhl casino. It was an opportunity to reflect on a busy year for this essential sports club in Nice and on the Côte d’Azur.
It brought together more than 300 personalities from the economic and sports sectors of the region, all the volunteer leaders of the sections that make up the club, as well as those who support it.
A “Cavigal d’Or” was awarded to Francis Camerini, a former professional footballer, who was absent last year due to health reasons.
The Historical Cavigal Club
The multi-sport club consists of 11 sections, each legally and financially independent but grouped within the Cavigal multi-sports, resembling a small federation with approximately 3,000 members in total.
Created in 1943, Cavigal results from the merger of three amateur clubs in Nice: AS Casino, VIctorine, and GALlia Club. In 1955, Cavigal Nice merged with Nice Sports to form Cavigal Nice Sports.
The founders aimed to unite energies to make sports accessible to the largest number of young people, particularly those from modest backgrounds, while also promoting the noble values related to sports: a taste for effort, self-surpassing, respect for others, adherence to rules, team spirit, and a sense of solidarity, truly an academy of Life.
Since its inception, Cavigal has provided 200 players to professional football, including Eric Roy, the current coach of OGC Nice. It has also trained one of the greatest French handball players of the moment, Xavier Barachet, sponsor of the 2010 Sports Victories, world champion in 2009 and 2011, and European champion in 2010.
Cavigal actively contributes to the sporting reputation of Nice Côte d’Azur. The club has seen great presidents since 1943: Pierre Arco, Jacques Cotta, Marcel Gratecos, Charles Ehrmann, François Cerutti, Roger Nicoletti, Daniel Olivieri, Suzanne Blanc, Maurice Cohen, and, since 2009, Diego Noto.
