In accordance with the regional Archaeology department (Ministry of Culture) last September, an archaeological monitoring accompanied the redevelopment work of Vieille Square in Isola.
This monitoring in the heart of the village led to the discovery of several ancient occupations, from protohistory to the present day.
This excavation, which has just begun, will be completed by mid-November and will allow for the restructuring of this square, which is even older than previously thought!
As the name of Vieille Square, already present on the Napoleonic land register in the 19th century, might suggest, the archaeological monitoring quickly uncovered the remains of a house predating the current urban fabric, approximately dated to the modern period. This discovery highlights the rich history of the village, already renowned for its religious heritage.
Finally, several hearths predating the Romanization of the Alps were uncovered in this 250 m2 area. While such occupations had been anticipated, and some characterized, this discovery opens the door to new knowledge about the past of our valleys.
