ART: Nelly Kahloun, the Inspired Orient

Latest News

Nelly Kahloun, sensitive and full of humility, remains true to her origins. Inspired by the everyday life of her childhood, enriched by the cultures of the East, the artist recreates the materials, the warm atmospheres radiant with colors, with zelliges, shimmering fabrics, hammams, evoking for all our astonished senses the smells, the music, the spicy flavors like a good Eastern dish. In short, all the magic of a real and projected East …

We admired the artist’s talent for bringing this almost mythical East back to life, her attention to detail,

in extreme luxuriance, as well as in extreme deprivation, even in monumental pieces.

Nelly Kahloun is now turning towards an art she defines as “abstract figurative” and calls “absurative,” a unique art on the border of yesterday and today, a door she crosses with each canvas.

“The material painting disembodies towards immateriality, when I am painting, I am in complete biblical contemplation, a spirituality open to all religions, to humanity,” specifies Nelly Kahloun. Who adds: “In my paintings, I mix figures from the collective Semitic memory and from my personal history.”

This plastic immateriality mimics an aspiration to spirituality that gradually invades the painter’s work. The dissolution of figures into the color, the light of the Levant, is also a fusion in faith and mystical momentum.

The canvases are quite ceremonial like a ritual, and if the first impression exudes a sensuality that is entirely Baudelairean, the entire work testifies to this obsession with spirituality.
