Asian Arts Museum: The Reopening of Chinese and Japanese Art

Latest News

The museum announced via the Departmental Council of Alpes-Maritimes the extension of three of its exhibitions. An opportunity to discover or rediscover the Japanese artist Ikuru Kuwajima, as well as “Dongba” and “Palace Paradis”.

One of them managed to step off the beaten track. Appropriately, “Sentier” is the name of the work by the Japanese creator. But what is it about? Have you ever wanted to travel on the Tamir plateaus? Located between Tajikistan and Afghanistan, it allows you to discover the landscapes of the Afghan mountains. All realized in black and white. The shots were taken on the Tajik banks. The filmmaker was able to present it at the Fotografia Europea festival in 2016 and at the 2017 Boutographies in Montpellier. This allowed him to win the 1st prize “Organised Book Contest” in Slovenia.

Funerary offerings made of Taiwanese paper

Here, we completely change realms with “Palace Paradis”. This paper is used to make objects that are meant to substitute real objects. These sculptures are then mounted on bamboo structures. For what purpose? To burn them in order to transfer them to the afterlife for the deceased. All sorts of objects are included, from coins to washing machines and even smartphones.

The Naxi ethnic minority in the spotlight

“Dongba” aims to introduce us to this population. They mainly live in China, at the junction of the Yunnan, Sichuan provinces, and the Tibet Autonomous Region. To pay homage to this people, the museum went all out. It transitions from an ancient culture with pictograms to more contemporary art. This visit is also sprinkled with information to better understand the mythology and clothing customs of the time.
