Those who are regular listeners of this Azur radio will surely have noticed: Aurélie Police is the antidote to bad moods. A remedy that won’t amplify the social security deficit, for once! For those who haven’t yet tuned in to 103.8, you just have to try it!

And if you want to catch her smile and see this young host in action, a special broadcast will be conducted live from Isola 2000 on Friday, the 12th from 16:30 to 19:00 as well as on Saturday, January 13, 2007, from 9:00 to 12:30. “The Andros Trophy is a unique concept. A clever mix of competition, spectacle, and conviviality, it delights all who try it and today stands as a key discipline in international motor sport.” Watch out, things will be slippery during these two days on France Bleu Azur’s airwaves!

Let’s return to our host whose mother is good humor and father is the sun! Nice-Première has decided to drop their mic. Who is hiding behind this convivial voice with a communicative smile?

Nice-Première: Aurélie, what path did you take to reach this station?

Aurélie Police: I got my first foothold in the media and radio, in particular, thanks to journalism training, I attended the Nouvelles school in Nice. I graduated and was fortunate enough to find work immediately afterward. For a year, I juggled 2 positions: traffic information for France Bleu Azur (in the morning) and shows and reporting for Cannes Radio (in the evening). That’s how I joined Radio France and the France Bleu network. Then, graciously let go by the Cannes radio I was working for (economic redundancy…), France Bleu Azur offered me trials for hosting. I had already held this role, but it was for more musical shows (very rock actually…) for small community radios (Agora, Radio Campus, etc.) So, I learned the host profession for France Bleu (and I continue to learn!), and after cutting my teeth in Nice, I “toured” the local France Bleu stations all over France (Poitiers, Aix, Belfort, Reims, Metz, Grenoble…) replacing hosts on leave. It allowed me to assimilate a maximum of techniques and to host significantly different segments (mornings, middays, afternoons, special outdoor shows…) Finally, back in Nice since September, for a daily show in the early evening (16:30-19:00). I love the Nice station deeply and I’m attached to the people who work there just as I am to the places. So, it’s a joy for me to work here and to be able to settle down a bit!

N-P: A station where you are the only girl to have a 2h30 show.

A.P.: Yes… it lacks a bit of female presence on air… I quite agree! But still, I’m the sole girl with a show, but not the only one on air. Daria is also very present with her cultural agendas and her cinema and literature columns. Sophie Péridieux, a “morning” journalist too… And even the girls who are not directly on air have their place on our airwaves… I’m thinking of Nadya and Nytia, our welcome desk officers who do an excellent job and whom our listeners know well! So, there are female voices on France Bleu Azur!

aurelie-police.jpg N-P: Would it be complicated to secure a spot on air as a woman?

A.P.: Yes and no… let me elaborate! Yes, because generally speaking, there’s a cautious attitude towards women in radio. The main argument is that a woman on air may possibly attract male listeners, but not female audiences. Women have always a jealousy sentiment towards each other (so they think!)… Of course, it’s a viewpoint I don’t share at all. I believe a woman can appeal equally to both male and female audiences. This way of thinking applies to radio in general and especially for the major music networks. But overall, the France Bleu network is far from this somewhat sexist policy. Women have as much a place as men.

No, because being a woman is, above all, an asset. We approach relationships with listeners differently than men do, we don’t necessarily have the same interests, desires, moods. Our radio primarily caters to women between 35 and 60, so we feel closer to them by being a woman ourselves. And the trend at the France Bleu network is towards increasing female presence on air and that’s great!

N-P: By the way, on what frequency are you tuned into in your daily life?

A.P.: I listen to many other stations. For music, I’m more into rock, so RTL2 or Fréquence K for local radios. I also like listening to national ones, Bourdin on RMC Info, Les Grosses Têtes on RTL. I’m also often tuned into France Inter, the Mouv’, and of course the other France Bleu stations (42 local radios in all!) And thanks to the internet, you can discover radio stations from all over the world! I’m a fan of Couleur 3, the Swiss radio. They are way ahead of what’s being done in France. They dare, both for music programming and for columns… I love it!

N-P: Unfaithful to your mother station!

A.R.: France Bleu Azur will always be my first love, the station where I started, but for a host at the beginning of her career, it’s better not to talk too much about loyalty!

N-P: To whom would you like to extend your mic?

A.P.: To all those who seem interesting to me, that’s what I already do! Curiosity is inexhaustible, and there are so many passionate and fascinating people to meet!

N-P: The show you would like to host?

A.P.:: Evenings with Francis Zegut! The rock bible with a testosterone-filled voice! A true monument!

N-P: If I tell you:

A.P.:

  • Internet: an inexhaustible source but not always reliable… great for discovering music and radio!
  • Radio: France Bleu, of course!
  • Television: C’est dans l’air, Envoyé Spécial, Ubik, Des racines et des ailes, France 4’s wild concerts, Denisot and his grand journal, the Experts (I’m a fan of series in the genre!)… Columbo (addicted…) and many other things still.

  • Host: Thierry Ardisson!!!! I adore this guy.

  • Nice: the sun every morning (for me, a Burgundy immigrant, it’s huge!), the sea, the Old Town and its night outings… and its traditions, a little pan bagnat or a piece of socca on the Cours Saleya (yum…)… a detour by the castle to read… in short, perfect!

N-P: And to close the air, if you had to choose another profession, what would it be?

A.P.: I would surely work in catering, my family is in it and it’s an environment I really like!
