Concerned with addressing the situations of isolation and precariousness related to housing conditions, the Department of Alpes-Maritimes decided to launch, starting in July 2014, Calls for Projects to support the creation of new spots in independent living residences (formerly known as sheltered housing).

These initiatives, included in the departmental gerontological plan 2012/2016 and the Seniors 06 plan, have been realized with the creation of 408 housing units, including 85 spots approved for social assistance for low-income individuals.

These independent living residences are intended for elderly individuals who are either able-bodied or have mild dependency. They include both private individual housing units (such as studios or one-bedroom apartments for couples) and common areas dedicated to collective living. They are often built in city centers near shops, public transportation, and services, helping to break isolation, maintain social connections, and prevent the loss of autonomy.

With a budget of โ‚ฌ152.4 million in 2018, policies for the elderly constitute a central pillar of the departmental solidarity policies. The Department, as the leader of social action for the elderly, implements a proactive and ambitious policy to concretely meet the needs and expectations of this demographic, reaffirming its commitment to healthy aging.
