On the occasion of the exhibition “Beate and Serge Klarsfeld: The Struggles of Memory (1968-1978),” a Screening-Meeting will take place this Monday at 7 PM at the CUM, centered around the film “La Traque” by Laurent Jaoui, with the presence of Serge and Beate Klarsfeld, Jacques Fredj, Director of the Shoah Memorial, and Hรฉlรจne France, moderator and journalist.

“La Traque” traces the life of Serge and Beate Klarsfeld, Nazi hunters, from their early standout actions in Germany to the legal and media battles leading to major trials in France. The film particularly follows the long and relentless hunt for Klaus Barbie, who had changed his identity and taken refuge in Latin America with the complicity of American networks.

Beyond the struggle of a couple and a lifetime, the decade of 1968-1978 marks a significant turning point in the evolution of the memory of the Holocaust in Europe and around the world. The spectacular actions of Beate and Serge Klarsfeld, conducted on multiple continents, play a major role in this movement towards recognition. While the Cold War was not yet over and the global context was one of profound cultural and political upheaval, the Klarsfeld couple committed themselves to and revolutionized the perception of Nazism and the genocide of the Jews in Germany and France.
