After a theologian Pope, will we have a sporty Pope?
This anecdote gives us reason to believe so.
Good news for athletes…
In 2008, a meeting between the leaders of San Lorenzo and Cardinal Bergoglio was the pretext to present him with a San Lorenzo jersey and his membership card for the club’s centenary (number 8823JN-O of March 12, 2008). He also received a letter from the San Lorenzo authorities, inviting him to officiate the 100th-anniversary mass of the institution.
During the conversation, Jorge Bergoglio recalled the extraordinary San Lorenzo champion team of 1946 with Farro, Pontoni, and Martino and mentioned that his father was a basketball player at the club and that he had accompanied him on various occasions to the Old Gasometer (the sports venue where the club team played at the time), which is now replaced by the New Gasometer.
In the centenary celebration mass of San Lorenzo that he officiated, Bergoglio called upon the Virgin Mary to place the San Lorenzo club “under her protection.”
