Demonstrations around educational institutions remain controlled this Monday, October 5 in the Alpes-Maritimes. At Masséna High School, law enforcement is controlling access while around fifty protesters have been pushed away from the school. Tomorrow, Tuesday, October 6, Université Côte d’Azur announces the closure of all its campuses.

The situation was calm this Monday, October 5 around Masséna High School in Nice, the gathering place designated by students for the day. Several signs were displayed, notably among union representatives from the National Education sector. The police presence was nonetheless significant around the establishment.

In front of the high school, the riot police were checking students’ bags. Regional officers were also present with walkie-talkies to invite students to quickly join the establishment, including for classes scheduled at 9 o’clock. Student entry into the high school ultimately took place calmly.

The green corridor remained closed and gatherings there were still discouraged.

Around fifty protesters moved away from Masséna High School

Around fifty protesters were also pushed further away from Masséna High School a little later. The gathering was located at the corner of Rue du Lycée and Avenue Félix Faure. About twenty riot police monitored the group when a few signs were raised, particularly by teaching union representatives, without any incidents being reported.

The prefecture has also defined perimeters around several educational institutions. In these areas, “protest marches, processions and gatherings are prohibited.” In Cannes, the measures notably concern the surroundings of Jules Ferry High School and Les Coteaux vocational high school.

The mobilization is to continue Tuesday, October 6. FCPE 06 has already announced its presence alongside high school students from 2 p.m. onward, at Garibaldi Square in Nice. The parents’ association highlights several issues concerning National Education, including the lack of teachers, AESH and ASH staff, difficulties related to inclusive education, the lack of medical and medical-social personnel, harassment, the condition of buildings, schedules and Parcoursup.

“Because their voice matters, because their future concerns us and because freedom of expression is a fundamental right. See you at 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 6, at Garibaldi Square in Nice”, say the mobilized parents in a post on social media.

Université Côte d’Azur closes all its campuses on Tuesday

Université Côte d’Azur has announced the closure of all its campuses for Tuesday, October 6. The decision comes due to planned demonstrations and security risks mentioned regarding the safety of people and property.

Students are urged not to go to the campuses. Educational continuity must be ensured remotely where possible, according to the methods defined by teaching teams.

For staff, telework is preferred when conditions allow. Employees whose presence is necessary to maintain essential activities may nonetheless access the campuses to ensure missions that cannot be interrupted.

Tuesday’s day promises to be particularly closely watched in Nice, as several gatherings are planned and security measures around educational institutions remain in place.
