From May 16 to November 30, 2024, the Heritage Center – The Senate hosts the exhibition “The 36 Views of Mont Chauve” by Jànluc Sauvaigo.
Between 2004 and 2010, the artist Jànluc Sauvaigo embarked on a project: illustrating a series of scenes from the “Nissard popular tale,” all set against the backdrop of Mont Chauve. Thus, “The 36 Views of Mont Chauve” was born, a work that celebrates a landmark of the Nice region.
The first piece of this series is directly inspired by the Japanese painter Hiroshige, while the subsequent pieces pay homage to Hokusai and his famous “Thirty-Six Views of Mount Fuji.” Sauvaigo explains: “I wanted to celebrate a magical place in the country in my own way. And in Nice, Mont Chauve was the obvious choice. You can see it from the Paillon and Var basins, almost everywhere.”
These illustrations immerse the viewer in a period ranging from the late 19th century to the 1920s. They depict the evolution of Niçoise society. Each image tells a unique story. This series of scenes describes the transition from a rural and traditional society to a world characterized by urbanism, modernity, and progress. Railways, automobiles, trams, and airplanes are symbols of this rapid transformation.
