Brassaï Photographer. His Encounter with Matisse.
Exhibition from February 25 – June 3, 2012,
Opening Friday, February 24 at 12:30 PM at the Théâtre de la Photographie et de l’Image – Charles Nègre and at 7 PM at the Musée Matisse
The Théâtre de la Photographie et de l’Image offers a wide panorama of Brassaï’s photographic work. The Musée Matisse presents selected images based on themes that connect the works of the painter and the photographer.
This exhibition pays tribute to the legacy of Gilberte Brassaï, granted to the City of Nice for the benefit of the Musée Matisse and realized in 2011.
It is under the pseudonym of Brassaï, meaning “from Brassó” based on his birthplace, that Gyula Halász established himself as one of the greatest photographers of the 20th century. Thriving at the heart of the artistic Paris of the twenties, recognized for his shots of nocturnal Paris from 1932 onwards, he never confined himself to this one activity. As a versatile artist, he also dabbled in literature, drawing, sculpture, and embraced photography as only an artist could.
