Cantonal Reactions 2011: The Front Will Not Pass Through Nice

Latest News

Follow the first reactions from the second round of the 2011 cantonal elections. With 7 candidates in the second round across the 8 cantons in Nice, the National Front ultimately drew a blank against right-wing (UMP) and left-wing candidates (PC and PRG). All eyes were on the 14th canton, where Dominique Estrosi-Sassone (UMP) eventually defeated the incumbent general councilor Paul Cuturello (PS).

cantonales2011-4.jpg Eric Ciotti (UMP โ€“ President of the General Council of Alpes-Maritimes): “These results are a continuation for the departmental majority. The quality of our record has been reflected in the polls. Gaining two cantons from the left is a good result.
Our majority emerges strengthened from these elections, especially with these fine victories by Dominique Estrosi Sassone in the 14th canton of Nice and Xavier Beck in the canton of Villefranche-sur-Mer.”

Christian Estrosi (UMP โ€“ Deputy Mayor of Nice and president of the UMP of Alpes-Maritimes): “This is a national failure for the UMP and a defeat of virtual France against real France except in Alpes-Maritimes. How can we put an end to the losing streak? I want the reconquest and victory of Nicolas Sarkozy in 2012. We need an emergency plan to stop losing and shift from a logic of defeats to a dynamic of victory. I applaud the republican victory of Jacques Victor and Patrick Mottard.” As the deputy mayor of Nice, “we have won all our cantons including that of Villefranche-sur-Mer. We have taken back two cantons from the Socialist Party in Nice.”

Patrick Mottard (PRG): “In many cantons, the left was its own opponent.”

Dominique Estrosi Sassone (UMP): “It is ‘Nice Together’ that wins this symbolically important canton. This emblematic canton was neglected. I want to fully commit to this canton with the support of the city of Nice and the general council. I will relinquish my mandate as regional councilor.”

Patrick Allemand (PS): “I am disappointed to have lost this 14th canton. Paul Cuturello fell against a steamroller. It is a setback, and I wish to congratulate all those who will continue in the general council.”

Lydia Schรฉnardi (FN): The FN “would have preferred to have elected candidates, but there were excellent results.”
