35 positions for school life auxiliaries to assist children with disabilities have been created for this school year. Currently, of the 600 children requiring individual support, there are 239 school life auxiliaries. The State has announced the recruitment of 2,700 auxiliaries nationwide, including 50 in this academy. “The General Council wanted to go further,” insists Christian Estrosi alongside the 32 young women and 3 young men who have passed the entrance exam for a training program that will make them nursing assistants.
Christian Estrosi was determined that the Alpes-Maritimes department should set an example for others because “the state cannot do everything.” The Academy Inspector, and Director of Departmental Services of National Education Bernard Maccario, believes that with “one school life auxiliary for 10 children with disabilities, the conditions for this 2007 school year are optimal.”
“Bringing these children to autonomy”
Hilde Hamel, like the other 34 auxiliaries, started her service this morning at Sรฉgurane College. She is responsible for two children with disabilities. She intervenes only to compensate for physical difficulties. “The goal is to bring these children to autonomy, so we are not here to do the work for them. We receive missions that generally last 3 weeks, assigned to us based on our experience,” she explains. The assistance service concerns only assistance within the school premises. These are temporary missions replacing permanent nursing assistants.
