Friday, June 24, 2011, at 6:30 PM at the Antoine-Lacassagne Center – Building C – 227, Avenue de la Lanterne, Nice
Celebration of the 20th anniversary of the first proton therapy treatment.
On this occasion, a tribute will be paid to the professionals who made this medical first possible: a “Crystal Mendjisky” will be awarded to them.
It was in Nice, on June 17, 1991, that the first French patient received proton therapy thanks to the beam from the MEDICYC medical cyclotron.
The Cyclotron is a particle accelerator that delivers protons (hydrogen nuclei) at 65 MeV, the optimal energy for treating ocular tumors located approximately 30mm deep.
-MEDICYC was entirely designed and built by a team from Nice under the direction of Pierre Mandrillon.
Since June 17, 1991, the medical team, initiated by Dr. Pierre Chauvel and consisting of ophthalmologists, radiotherapists, medical physicists, and their collaborators, has treated more than 4,300 patients, which represents nearly 5% of the patients who have benefited from proton therapy worldwide.
MEDICYC was funded by public generosity.
The construction of the building was financially supported by the City of Nice (€716,500) and the General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes (€1,250,000 and €122,000 for landscaping).
