The city of Nice celebrated today a wedding (almost) unlike any other. The first Chinese marriage took place at 11 am at the C.U.M. Here’s a detailed look at the scene and behind the scenes.
Winners of the first edition of the ‘Romantic France’ contest, two Chinese lovers won a very grand wedding ceremony in Nice. Her name is Xiaoging Gong and she married Li Qing Pan, aged 24 and 28 respectively. They are francophiles and both had as a witness the Chinese Consul General in Marseille: Mr. Bian Jiang Qiang.
A prestigious reception, a painting by Matisse in the background, the Promenade des Anglais and the Mediterranean on offer; the city pulled out all the stops in partnership with the tourism agency Atout France China.
Rudy Salles, deputy mayor of Nice in charge of tourism and international affairs, officiated the confirmation of their union. He did not hesitate to enumerate the countless assets of the city of Nice and insisted on welcoming the Chinese, which he strives to “optimize.” As a little anecdote, he recalled that Chinese President Hu Jintao “preferred in agreement with his wife” to reside in Nice rather than Versailles during his visit in November 2010.
After the brief speech, came the time for more significant words, they said “yes, I do” in good French in front of Chinese students who came specially for the occasion. With the first Chinese marriage thus celebrated, the city of Nice scored a beautiful communication coup, ensuring the favor of the Chinese who will now come not only as tourists but also as future spouses.
“A real fairy tale” for the young lady and “exceptional Niçoise hospitality” for the gentleman, they are ready to face reality, meeting each other online.
The couple departed on a small train, fully enjoying the Niçoise folklore, partner boutiques, and the Negresco where they stayed and are at the forefront of a list of Chinese newlyweds ready to expand.
