Christian ESTROSI made history in the city of Nice by becoming, on March 21, 2008, the 64th mayor of Nice. He succeeded the outgoing mayor, Jacques Peyrat.
The year 2008 saw numerous changes in his political career. At the beginning of the year, Christian Estrosi wanted to become the Mayor of Nice while holding the position of Secretary of State for Overseas Territories. Thus, he started the year 2008 amid ministerial criticism (private jet affair and questioning the land rights in Mayotte) and local acclaim (municipal election). He resigned from his state duties to focus on his region. Reelected in March 2008 as president of the Alpes-Maritimes General Council, the former member of the De Villepin government became, in April 2008, president of the Nice Côte d’Azur Urban Community. Two months later, he became the deputy secretary-general of the UMP. In December 2008, after five years of presidency, he left the Alpes-Maritimes General Council.

Sophie DUEZ was born in Nice in 1962. She caught the attention of the people of Nice with her first film, “Marche à l’ombre” and was nominated a year later for the César Award for Most Promising Actress. This native of Nice has since appeared in around fifteen films, both in cinema and television. In 2008, during the municipal election campaign, she joined the list “Changer d’Ere” of the socialist candidate Patrick Allemand. In November 2008, after persistent rumors about her association with the elected mayor Christian Estrosi, she was officially appointed president of the committee for reflecting on the cultural project of the old slaughterhouses. This complex is expected to become, by 2010, the cultural hub of Nice. In recent months, she has decided to remain out of the public eye following a minor rivalry with Muriel Marland Militello.
