Based on a true story, the narrative takes place a few months after Algeria’s independence. A martyr’s widow sees her house expropriated by the local authorities in the city of Saïda (High Plateaus of the Southwest). But her determination leads her to plead her case directly to the President of the Republic.

In the presence of the director

Director, screenwriter, actor, Abdelkrim Bahloul left Algeria in 1971 and moved to France, where he studied cinema at IDHEC. A camera operator for French TV and an assistant director, he became known with “Le Thé à la menthe” (1984), “A Vampire in Paradise” (1991), and “The Assassinated Sun” (2004).

The Fifth String by Selma BARGACH

The story tells of the journey of Malek, a young passionate lutist, in search of the secret of the 5th string, which takes him from Casablanca to Essaouira via Tangier. Between the strictness of his uncle Amir, a master of music, and the spirited talent of his beloved Laura, he will pursue his dream and find his path.
Both a coming-of-age tale and a contemporary musical story, the film makes music a character in its own right. It develops and undergoes the same trials as the protagonist. It is his shadow and becomes his light, ending in notes of hope.
This film has just begun its tour and is collecting awards: Festivals of Tangier, Kicheon (South Korea), Khourigba.
Featuring the soundtrack by musicians Safy Boutella and Trio Joubran and in collaboration with Hassan Benjelloun (Les Oubliés de l’histoire Cinéalma 2010)
In the presence of the director
Graduated in Art and Experimental Cinema at the Sorbonne, Selma Bargach started as an assistant director with Moroccan and foreign filmmakers. Later, she directed short fiction films. “The Fifth String” is her first feature film.
