“Viens!” is above all a story of young love. It begins with love at first sight between two teenagers, Julien and Michèle, in the 1970s. However, their almost symbiotic relationship ends in separation four years later, following a series of misunderstandings and miscommunications. Julien still loves Michèle, to the point of becoming ill from the separation, but she decides to end this suffocating relationship.
A few years later, each has rebuilt their lives separately but has not forgotten the other. When they randomly cross paths, the flame that once burned brightly reignites. Yet this reunion is very brief, ending in another separation, with both returning to their own lives. However, Julien is now more determined than ever: he wants to win back the woman he never stopped loving!
Adolescence and adulthood intertwine in this love story, structured across two timelines: that of the 1970s, telling the story of young Julien and Michèle, and that of 2017-2018, during which Julien tries to win Michèle back by writing the novel he promised to write when they were young.
The author takes us on a journey between the two equally fascinating eras. We already know the outcome of the first part of their story, which is terribly cruel in this narrative. So, we cling to the second part, hoping that Julien will achieve his goal. The author toys with the emotions of his characters, and with ours as well. We become so attached to Julien that we feel his pain.
Serge Marignan’s writing is remarkable. His dialogues seem authentic, coming across as genuine and sincere. We are delightfully transported back to the 1970s, with many film and music references, only to be brought back to 2017-2018 and social networks, through which Julien tries to reconnect with Michèle.
Rarely have I seen so many twists and turns in a romance. They add a suspenseful dimension that is seldom found in this type of story. The cherry on top is the epilogue, offering a final twist I absolutely did not expect.
