They gave birth to that melodious and rich ska which draws from various musical inspirations. They transformed jazz, calypso, rhythm ‘n’ blues, and some Jamaican chords into a whole new, lively and warm music: ska was born. Between 64 and 70, the ska rhythm slowed down to make way for rocksteady, then downright for roots reggae (still under the instigation of The Skatalites). The Skatalites are still here. They have recorded more than thirty albums under the name The Skatalites, have collaborated and accompanied all active Jamaican singers. They taught the ropes to a very young beginner (who later became legendary) named Bob Marley. A Skatalites concert is a bit like an open book and the chance to live slices of Jamaican music history live.
