This conference is part of the series “From the States of Savoy to Italian Unity,” organized by the Directorate of Historical Heritage, Language, and Culture of Nice, under the impetus of Jean-Marc Giaume, Municipal Councillor.
Questions related to nationality were significant in the formation of Italian unity. The themes of nationality occupy politically engaged literature aimed at building, by drawing from Italian history and culture, a national identity and consciousness based on the community of territory, language, religion, and customs. The principle of nationality is the cornerstone of the national movement’s programs and the propaganda efforts of patriots. However, the principle of nationality also played a critical role in the context of diplomatic relations between the Kingdom of Sardinia and European powers, notably with France and England. Through the events and the analysis of official acts and diplomatic correspondence, the conference will highlight the use of this principle during the years and months leading to the formation of the Kingdom of Italy.
