In his daily press briefing, the Director General of Health, Jรฉrรดme Salomon, announced that France now has 22,300 confirmed cases in the country. Currently, 10,176 people are hospitalized, of whom 2,516 are in serious condition in intensive care, 434 more than yesterday. 34% of these patients in serious condition are under 60 years old; 58% are between 60 and 80 years old.

Furthermore, France has 1,100 deaths in hospitals, excluding deaths in nursing homes, which is 240 more than yesterday evening. 85% of them are over 70 years old. Finally, 3,281 people have recovered since the beginning of the epidemic.

The executive’s scientific council on Covid-19 has deemed it “essential to extend the confinement” beyond the initially planned two weeks.

“The confinement will likely last at least six weeks from its implementation on March 17,” the Council writes, also stating that it “considers a strengthening of the confinement necessary.”
