Covid-19: Europe passes the one million deaths mark

Latest News

With over one million deaths, Europe is the continent most bereaved since the start of the Covid-19 pandemic.

The grim tally, which includes 52 countries and territories on the continent, extending to Russia and Azerbaijan in the agency’s calculations, makes it the most bereaved region in the world. Indeed, Europe is ahead of Latin America and the Caribbean (832,577 deaths), the United States/Canada (585,428 deaths), and Asia (285,824 deaths).

These deaths represent more than a third of the 2.94 million pandemic victims recorded worldwide, while Europe only accounts for one-ninth of the global population.
