At only 20 years old, Cyntia Vescan, a member of the Nice Olympic Wrestling club, will be the sole French representative in wrestling at the London Olympics. And Cynthia doesn’t plan to cross the Channel just for the sake of it: she wants the title and nothing less.
Could you introduce yourself to the wider public who may not know you very well yet?
My name is Cynthia Vescan, and I am 20 years old. I have been practicing wrestling since the age of seven. I live in Strasbourg, and I have been a member of the Nice Olympic Wrestling club since the start of the season.
How does it feel to be the only French female wrestler qualified for the Olympics?
It’s quite a mixed feeling. On one hand, it’s a great pride to be qualified for the Olympic Games at only 20 years old. However, it’s true that I would have preferred to represent France as part of a whole team, meaning four girls.
Your sister, Adeline, was also competing to participate in this Olympiad, but she did not qualify…
Unfortunately, she got injured. It’s a pity that we won’t both be on the trip, but that’s how sports go… I’m convinced that in 2016, at the Rio Olympics, the Vescan family will be complete.
What is your program until the Games?
Currently, I am in training camp in Belarus. Then I will compete in the European Championships in Croatia. It will be a good start to my preparation. To finish this preparation, I’ll do two training camps: one in Canada and another in France. There are only two months left before the Games, and two months go by quickly!
What is your goal in London?
The gold medal!
