Director Christopher Nolan leaves Warner for Universal

Latest News

This announcement had the effect of a bomb in the film industry. Indeed, director Christopher Nolan has announced his departure from the production and distribution company Warner to join Universal.

Warner and Christopher Nolan had a collaboration of over 20 years. However, this week, the director of Inception, Interstellar, and Tenet decided to move to Universal for the production of his next film: a biopic on the creator of the atomic bomb, Robert Oppenheimer.

The main reason? A disagreement with Warner’s production and distribution policy. In fact, Warner decided to release all films from its 2021 catalog simultaneously in theaters and streaming, with the risk of a decline in theater attendance (and therefore revenue) and an increase in internet piracy.

“Several of our greatest filmmakers and most important stars of the industry went to bed thinking they were working for the best movie studio and woke up to discover they were actually working for the worst streaming service.”

Nevertheless, Christopher Nolan set numerous conditions for Universal regarding the production of his next film. The director is demanding 100 million dollars for production as well as the same amount for marketing. He also wishes to have complete artistic freedom for the film, receive 20% of the revenue, and have a theatrical run of at least 100 days. Finally, he desires no competition during the film’s release. Universal should not release any production 3 weeks before and 3 weeks after Christopher Nolan’s film. To all these demands, the studio reportedly replied simply, “yes.”

Christopher Nolan’s new film will begin production at the start of 2022.
