From Saturday, May 18, 2023, to September 22, 2024, the City of Nice invites you to explore the exhibition “From Gesture to Flame” at the Museum of Archaeology of Nice / Cimiez.
Dive into the history of fire production, from its earliest traces at the site of Terra Amata to the present day, through an immersive and educational journey. Fire, much more than just a chemical phenomenon, has always exerted a powerful fascination over humanity.
The earliest traces of constructed hearths, dating back 400,000 years, show the domestic use of fire, marking a crucial turning point in human evolution. This mastery of fire, the result of remarkable ingenuity, required knowledge and mastery of specific techniques to reproduce it at will.
The exhibition unfolds in six thematic areas, each dedicated to a key stage in the discovery and mastery of fire. Visitors can explore the origin of fire, the friction of wood, the percussion of stone, the flint lighter and steel percussion, bamboo, air and light, as well as modern fire production techniques.
