We are in 1990 when Edouard Feinstein founded the O.S.E. association. Its goal: to do everything to change the world. Nothing more ambitious but the arguments are there. Thanks to a new methodology, the members of the association, about 475 volunteers, are tireless workers whose activities have, over the years, spread across the entire country. It all started with animal protection, humanitarian operations, and cleaning up the Vincennes Lake, which was their first major feat. From then on, O.S.E. is above all recognized for its projects along the banks of the Seine. In 18 years, the association has consistently made headlines with nearly 1,200 tonnes of waste removed in the Paris region. In 1993, the Var River became one of their favorite operations (360 tonnes of waste). From the Paillon in Nice (2 tonnes) to the Loup River (11 tonnes), O.S.E. gradually familiarized itself with the Côte d’Azur.
## Not Just a Simple Sweep
O.S.E. doesn’t just remove rubbish and rusty carcasses from the waters. By diversifying its activities, it’s often where there is urgency. It can organize projects in wooded areas on the hills of Carros, as well as along roads and peri-urban areas when it comes to illegal dumps. The organization sorts recyclable waste, cleans, and rehabilitates cities or disadvantaged neighborhoods. Finally, two major reforestation operations have been added to the list. First, on the outskirts of Bombay in India, then on the hills of Biot in 1998. As a free and independent association, it continuously receives sincere thanks from the cleaned-up municipalities, yet it does not receive financial aid.
But unfortunately, knowing how to recycle waste is not enough to improve the environment. O.S.E. also takes on the mission of teaching useful gestures by offering exhibitions on waste, such as those in Paris at the SAMARITAINE in the 90s, or at the association’s headquarters.
No matter the cost, O.S.E. proves its worth, reminding that “nothing is necessarily lost, it’s just a matter of getting started.”
