Opening of the exhibitions of Vincent Ganivet, Sarah Sze, and Assan Smati, on Friday, February 4, 2011, at 6:30 PM on the first floor of the Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art of the City of Nice.

These three exhibitions are dedicated to young artists from different backgrounds: Paris, New York, and Berlin.

A graduate of the ร‰cole Nationale Supรฉrieure des Beaux-Arts, Vincent Ganivet develops an artistic practice of the absurd and the ephemeral. He diverts raw materials, everyday objects, and phenomena to create works of art. He reveals the hidden nature of the most mundane objects, thus bringing them poetry and beauty. For the MAMAC, he embarks on the construction of a new structure of cinder blocks (a hollow and molded construction material), defying the laws of gravity.

Sarah Sze combines sculpture with architectural experience. Scattered in constellations, often according to the location of execution, her installations are orchestrated like a miniaturist. Each object is meticulously placed according to its size, shape, and belonging to a subset, like a catalog from the Museum of Natural History. For this exhibition, Sarah Sze presents a work entitled The Uncountables (Encyclopedia), created in 2010 for the Tanya Bonakdar Gallery in New York.

Assan Smatiโ€™s work exudes technicality while remaining sensitive and poetic. It combines human representation with a familiar bestiary. Like artists of the past, Assan Smati draws, paints, sculpts, engraves. And like the craftsmen of his time, he photographs, uses computer tools, and builds installations. His works confirm Assan Smati’s commitment to realistic figurative art that strongly stands out from conventions.
