In accordance with the European directive 2015/4131, the French and Italian authorities have decided to implement, starting from Friday, January 1, 2016, the cross-border exchange of information, allowing the prosecution of their citizens who commit traffic offenses in the territory of the other country.
This cross-border exchange of information has already been established with Belgium, Spain, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Romania. A specific bilateral agreement also provides for it with Switzerland.
Since the deployment of speed radars in France, about 21% of recorded violations (50% during the summer period) involve vehicles registered abroad, while they represent only 5% of the traffic.
In 2015, nearly 414,000 offenses recorded by French automatic radars involved vehicles registered in Italy.
The start of information exchange between France and Italy was announced by the interministerial delegate for road safety yesterday during a visit to the Alpes-Maritimes.
According to Emmanuel BARBE, “This is an essential measure to combat speeding, a major cause of road accidents, but also an additional step towards equal treatment between French and foreign drivers, which the Interministerial Committee for Road Safety on October 2 aimed to better ensure.”
From now on, Italian drivers caught by French radars will receive a notice of violation, as will French drivers committing speeding or running red lights in Italy.
