G20: Amnesty International France issues an appeal to Nicolas Sarkozy

On the occasion of the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty on October 17, 2011, Amnesty International France made an appeal to Nicolas Sarkozy to strengthen the tools to effectively combat poverty.

faitessigneractu_1_.jpgFor several years, Amnesty International has participated in a global mobilization to ensure that “second-generation rights,” economic, social, and cultural rights, become as enforceable as civil and political rights. The first result was the adoption by the United Nations in 2008 of the Optional Protocol to the ICESCR (International Covenant on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights). The challenge now is to make this mechanism effective.

“We are asking Nicolas Sarkozy, in his capacity as the president of the G20, to set an example so that all victims of human rights violations can access effective remedies, whether in terms of education, housing, health, or work,” explains Geneviรจve Garrigos, President of Amnesty International France.
