The CATMED platform was created following the signing of the Mรกlaga Charter on February 7, 2011, by the mayors of the 11 founding cities and regions: Malaga, Seville, Valencia, Barcelona, Aix Community, Marseille, Turin, Genoa, Rome, the Attica region, and Thessaloniki, advocates for territorial cooperation among Mediterranean cities.
The aim of this platform is to change urban behaviors to reduce the environmental impact of urbanization and limit greenhouse gas emissions.
Based on a framework of 20 sustainability indicators, CATMED seeks to understand the specificity of Mediterranean urban systems, evaluate the policies implemented, and launch experiments in pilot districts called “Green Apple”.
Gaston FRANCO reminded that “the Nice-Cรดte d’Azur metropolis fits perfectly within the objectives of the Mรกlaga Charter since it is committed to an exemplary approach in terms of sustainable development and energy savings, as evidenced by the Eco-Vallรฉe project in the Var Plain, classified as Operation of National Interest in France.”
For the Azur region deputy, “the urban dimension, and more specifically, sustainable urban models must be better considered in the future 2014/2020 European regional policy, as well as in European policy on energy efficiency and combating climate change.”
“It is also necessary to rethink the sustainable urban dimension within the framework of the Union for the Mediterranean and launch concrete projects of cooperation between cities on the northern and southern shores, gathered around common issues and challenges. This is part of our reflection on establishing a macro-regional strategy in the Mediterranean,” added Gaston FRANCO.
