Health: “Rouge Gorge”: Everyone Concerned, Everyone Mobilized

Latest News

France rises against the scourge of throat cancers with the launch of the national awareness and prevention campaign “Rouge Gorge.” Led by scientific societies and supported by the Nice Cancer Control Center, this initiative aims to rally all forces to combat this rapidly increasing disease.

Throat cancers have their origins in the consumption of tobacco and alcohol, but a growing threat emerges: human papillomavirus (HPV) infection. This reality now alarmingly affects women and young people. Faced with this development, prevention, information, and early screening stand out as essential bulwarks to reverse the trend.

The French Society of Cervico-Facial Oncology (SFCCF) and the French Society of Otorhinolaryngology and Head and Neck Surgery (SFORL) are taking the lead by launching the Rouge Gorge national campaign. From April 2 to 5, 2024, this initiative will come to life. Under the guidance of Professor Alexandre BOZEC, regional ambassador of the campaign, and Dr. Agathe VILLARME, local representative.

Alarming figures

With approximately 15,000 new cases per year in France, these cancers represent a growing threat to public health. While the average age of onset is between 50 and 64 years, the increase in cases among women, notably in younger age groups, is causing deep concern.

The Rouge Gorge campaign emphasizes the importance of consulting quickly in case of persistent symptoms. Pain, abnormal patches, hoarseness, painful swallowing… So many signals that should not be ignored and require prompt attention.

A solid alliance against adversity

Supported by institutional partners, scientific societies, private actors, associations, and hospital institutions, including the Antoine Lacassagne Center, the Rouge Gorge campaign strives to be a collective force united in the fight against throat cancers.

Founded in 1961 and certified with “High Quality of Care” distinction, the Antoine Lacassagne Center embodies a bastion of innovation and excellence in cancer care. Committed to this fight, the Center remains an unwavering ally in the national mobilization against throat cancers.
