In light of this hot topic, Tocqueville appears as a precursor and a visionary, as he dedicates a chapter to individualism in 1840, which remains famous, in his book ‘Democracy in America.’

To address this subject, the CUM will host leading American, European, and Japanese specialists from the most prestigious schools and universities for two days, on May 10 and 11, where they will engage in potentially fascinating debates.

The colloquium will be opened by Laurence Guellec from the Institut Universitaire de France on Monday, May 10, at 2 p.m. While the closing conference, “The American Self and the French Institution: Two Individualisms, Two Ways of Making Society,” will feature sociologist Alain Ehrenberg, director of research at the CNRS and EHESS, and will take place the following day, May 11, at 4 p.m.
