The Women’s Ironman World Championship concluded this afternoon in Nice. This edition was marked by the victory of Germany’s Laura Philipp, who triumphed with a record-breaking time!

3.8 kilometers of swimming, 180 kilometers of cycling, followed by a marathon (42 km). Such was the program for the 1,400 athletes who started this morning on the Ponchettes beach. Among them, 52 professionals were competing for the world champion title. At the end of this incredible challenge, Laura Philipp (37 years old) crossed the finish line first, setting a record time of 8h45’15”, more than 26 minutes better than the previous record set by Corinne Abraham in 2018.

Emerging from the water in 14th position with a four-minute gap behind the leaders, the German then dominated the competition, first on the bike, and then during the run. “It’s my ultimate dream come true. And particularly here in Nice, on the most beautiful course, in this wonderful city. It’s the best reward for all those who supported me, always believed in me, and helped me reach the peak of my form here. Thank you also to all the spectators for their support,” Laura Philipp declared at the finish. The last lap was very hard, but I kept repeating to myself that it was necessary to become the Ironman world champion. I have no words. I am the happiest person on earth.”

Marjolaine Pierré led the race for a long time

From the beginning of the 180 km bike course, the Niçoise Marjolaine Pierré took the lead, hoping for a spot on the podium. Caught by the “German TGV” at kilometer 94, Marjolaine Pierré held on. In a group of three, joined by the British Kat Matthews, the Frenchwoman seemed in a good position, with more than five minutes ahead of the chasers. However, the pace set downhill by her two escape companions was too high. She had to ease up after 142 kilometers.

Still 3rd at the start of the run, Marjolaine Pierré had more than a three-minute lead over American Chelsea Sodaro. But after 9 kilometers, she was overtaken by the latter. At the finish, Marjolaine Pierré completed her Ironman in 9h09’34”. An exceptional performance for the young 24-year-old athlete, and an unforgettable moment. “I took great pleasure in running on the Promenade des Anglais, where I’ve always trained. I received a lot of support from the public, whom I would like to thank warmly. I am super happy with the result for my second Ironman format.”

There is no doubt that we will see her on the podium in the years to come, perhaps at a new world championship on the Promenade des Anglais.
