It is the Ensemble Artaserse that opens the festival this Saturday on the forecourt of the Basilica of Saint Michael the Archangel, accompanied by Philippe Jaroussky (counter-tenor) and Emöke Baràth (soprano) in opera arias by Handel and Rossini.
For 6 years now at the head of the Festival, the artistic director, Paul-Emmanuel Thomas, a young conductor leading an international career, has prepared a program (mixing orchestral concerts, chamber music, opera, recitals, great soloists…) divided into 3 series: “Les Grands interprètes” at 9:30 p.m. (10 concerts); the “Concerts de 18h00” (9 concerts); and the “Off” (at the Esplanade Francis Palmero: 3 concerts) at 9:30 p.m.

Bertrand Chamayou (piano), on July 30 (Chopin, Schumann, Wagner, Liszt); on July 31, it will be Christophe Rousset and Les Talens Lyriques in 2 operas: Dido and Aeneas by Purcell and Actéon by Marc Antoine Charpentier; on August 2, Daniel Müller-Schott (cello) and Nicholas Angelich (piano) will perform Beethoven, Shostakovitch, Schumann, Brahms; on August 3, piano recital by Piotr Anderszewski (Bach, Beethoven); on August 4, violin-piano duo Janine Jansen and Alexander Gavrylyuk will interpret Brahms, Schumann, Franck; then on August 6, Yaron Herman and his trio will deliver a jazz concert; Isabelle Faust (violin) will invite her friends to play with her on August 8, and together, they can be heard in Schubert, Haydn; on August 10, chamber music with pianist Elisabeth Leonskaja and the Signum String Quartet (Schumann, Schubert); finally, for the closing concert on August 11, Lars Vogt, on piano and conducting the Royal Northern Sinfonia, will complete the integral of Beethoven’s piano concertos, initiated in 2016, with Concerto No. 5, The Emperor, preceded by Beethoven’s Symphony No. 4.
The artists participating in the “Concerts de 18h00” at the Cocteau Museum are : on July 29, Jean-Frédéric Neuburger, piano (Liszt, Debussy, Manoury, Neuburger, Chopin); on July 31, Vikingur Olafsson, piano (Bach, Rameau, Marcello, Daquin); on August 1, Alexander Chaushian, cello (Crumb, Bach, Sollima, Paganini); on August 3, Geneviève Laurenceau, violin and David Bismuth, piano (de Falla, Granados, Saint-Saëns); on August 4, Paul Lay will improvise on piano during the screening of Olivier Garouste’s film Billie Holiday Passionately; on August 5, carte blanche to Sayaka Shoji and the students of the Festival’s Violin Academy (Zakhar Bron School of Music); on August 7, Takàcs String Quartet (Mozart, Dvorak); on August 8, Alexandre Kantorow, piano (Chopin, Saint-Saëns, Rachmaninov); on August 10, Camille Thomas, cello, and Lucas Debargue, piano (Beethoven, Debargue, Rachmaninov).
In addition to the music festival, there is an “Off” (with free entry) that highlights original formations: Félicien Brut (accordion), the Hermès Quartet and Edouard Macarez (double bass) in “Le Pari des bretelles” (July 27-9:30 p.m.); SPARK, The classical band in “On the dance floor” (August 1-9:30 p.m.); Invictus Brass Quintet (August 9-9:30 p.m.). There are also violin master classes with the Zakhar Bron School of Music from July 29 to August 5 (teachers: Boris Garlitsky, Sayaka Shoji, Liana Tretiakova, violins); conferences; flash mobs; concerts in the heart of the city; a video game; guided tours; an exhibition… In short, a festive atmosphere around the Menton Music Festival.
