During the month of December, you will be able to discover the richness and diversity of the scientific heritage of Nice thanks to a series of lectures offered by the City of Nice and its Historical Heritage Department, led by Jean-Marc Giaume, Municipal Councilor delegated to Historical Heritage.

The fifth lecture will be given by Frédéric Patras, Director of Research at the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, Jean-Alexandre Dieudonné Laboratory, and Frédérique Vidal, President of the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, on Saturday, December 1st at 3 PM, at the Theatre of Photography and Image in Nice, about Nice’s scientists: “Paul Montel, Dieudonné, and the Mathematicians of Today.”

Mathematics appeared in Nice, in historical manuals, during the Renaissance, with F. Pellos, author of a remarkable treatise on commercial arithmetic. In the 20th century, two other names marked this history. First, Paul Montel, originally from Nice, was a great analyst, committed mathematician, and humanist.

More recently, Jean Dieudonné, whose writings and role in Bourbaki made a lasting impact, but whose role in the formation of the Faculty of Sciences in Nice is perhaps less known. It is thanks to him that the current Nice mathematics community emerged, established at the U.N.S. laboratory that bears his name.

The lecture will pay tribute to their intellectual journeys and their commitments to science and society.

Frédéric Patras is a mathematician (algebraist), a CNRS Director of Research at the Jean-Alexandre Dieudonné Laboratory, and a Doctor of Mathematics, author of a book on the philosophy and history of 20th-century mathematics “Contemporary Mathematical Thought,” P.U.F., 2001.

Frédérique Vidal is the President of the University of Nice Sophia Antipolis, a university professor in life sciences, and former director of the Faculty of Sciences.
