Ligue 1: Nice sees Europe slipping away

Latest News

After this new draw conceded on their home turf, OGC Nice sees the last Europa League spots slipping further away. By hosting Reims this Sunday, the Azureans could have closed in on Montpellier, currently in eighth place.

The match between Nice and Reims concluded at a slow pace with a sad 0-0 draw. It was an extremely defensive game where both goalkeepers faced only 3 shots on target out of 23 attempts. While Reims stagnates in the lower half of the table, the red and blacks are held back just a few points away from the last European spots. Moreover, their direct competitors Montpellier (7th) and Marseille (6th) neutralized each other (3-3) on Saturday evening, while Rennes took all three points against Nantes.

It’s safe to say that now, six points behind OM, the Nice team has almost no achievable objectives for this end of the season. If the Olympians were to stumble in this final sprint, it would be difficult not to see Rennes or Montpellier seize the opportunity. They will even have the chance to come to Allianz Arena to decide the eighth place.

However, the Azureans will cross paths with Lille and Lyon, two contenders for the French championship title. Nice knows that this is not the ideal schedule to finish the 2020-2021 campaign. Adrian Usea’s men are against the wall, and even a single draw would spell the end of any hope.
