The tramway issue is far from being buried in Nice! Despite Christian Estrosi’s eagerness to move from plans to execution to quickly reach a point of no return, the opposition, whether right or left, is unanimous in contrasting him.
For Marie-Christine Arnautu: “The recent news developments, notably the difficulties encountered with the port parking, prove how accurate the analyses of the ‘Nice Bleu Marine’ list were, which I presented at my press conference on July 27th.
On the issue of Tramway Line 2, I particularly want to reiterate our commitment to an efficient, low-cost, and feasible route.
Efficient, because it allows for the requalification of the urban space traversed. This is possible with a surface route, but not with the Mayor’s buried project.
Low-cost because the finances of the City and the Metropolis, already heavily burdened by the outgoing mandate, do not allow for the extravagance of a project that will end up exceeding a billion. This is possible with a surface route, but not with the Mayor’s buried project.
Feasible because, with six years already of delay in the implementation of Line 2, we cannot afford to waste more time on a technically difficult project held hostage by uncontrollable uncertainties, as evidenced by the waterproofing problems encountered in the current port parking construction. This is possible with a surface route, but not with the Mayor’s buried project.
For all these reasons, because Nice urgently needs Tramway Line 2, but it cannot afford it at just any cost, I will offer voters a clear and direct choice in our program.
If elected, I will start, in the summer of 2014, the construction of a surface tramway, following the route of the current dedicated bus lane. What is viable and possible with the ‘Nice Bleu Marine’ list is not with Christian Estrosi.”
