After being invited to the MAMAC in 2018, a new collaboration between the museum and artist Irene Kopelman is born. “Marine Models. Drawing Regeneration,” an exhibition to be discovered at the MAMAC from September 24, 2022, to April 2, 2023.
Between Art and Science
This exhibition is the result of Irene Kopelman’s original work with two research laboratories, a fruitful dialogue between scientists and discoveries of our ecosystem landscapes.

For ten years, she has been interested in and studied ecosystems. This time, Irene Kopelman wanted to focus on our ecosystem, the Mediterranean. To do this, she worked for many months with the Laboratory of Developmental Biology of Villefranche-sur-Mer (LBDV) and with the Cancer and Aging Research Institute of Nice (IRCAN), a member of the Marine Resources Research Federative Institute (IFR MARRES). These laboratories specialize in working with marine microorganisms that are invertebrates. These organisms have the ability to regenerate, and it is from this specificity that her works will derive. She will analyze and represent the regeneration process.
Thus, her drawings, glass works, ceramic pieces, and paintings testify to this research. Although the main entry point is the subject, that is, the scientific part, Irene is first and foremost a painter. She conveys what she perceives through her works. The act of drawing is part of the understanding process but only occurs after familiarization with the creature’s characteristics.
Irene Kopelman

Irene Kopelman is an Argentine artist whose work explores the relationship between science and art. She studied at the School of Arts of the National University of Cรณrdoba and in 2002 became a laureate of the Rijksakademie residency program in Amsterdam.
Fascinated by cabinets of curiosities and representations of landscapes, she explores exceptional ecosystems around the globe in search of understanding the mechanisms of the living world. Her method: observe, take notes, reflect, then draw.
