Europe Day is celebrated every year on May 9th, and this has been the case since 1985. It was indeed on May 9, 1950, that Robert Schuman presented his proposal for a European organization, essential for maintaining peaceful relations.
Europe Day was established by European leaders at the European Council in Milan in June 1985 and celebrated for the first time in 1986.
Each year, European institutions, communities, associations, schools, and citizens celebrate May 9th with various events and festivities.
May 9th is both a day of information and discussion about the European Union and a popular festival during which, in each member state, European citizens celebrate their different cultures and traditions.
Europe Day is also an opportunity to highlight the symbols of the European Union’s unity: a flag with twelve stars, an anthem, and a motto, “United in diversity.” In the Eurozone countries, the single currency is another symbol of unity.
