May 9th is the 61st anniversary of the Schuman Declaration.

“Here in Nice, where historical tradition and cultural ties particularly bind us to two of the founding countries of Europe, it is the duty of Italian and French citizens to patch up the European flag, the symbol of a common endeavor recently unraveled by two governments held hostage by extremist, xenophobic, or regional political groups.
More than ever, as shown by the recent Tunisian immigrant crisis,
problems of a certain magnitude can only find
sensible solutions within a collective framework.
Therefore, more Europe is needed, and European institutions must be called upon to address situations that cannot be left solely to national governments, which are more concerned with electoral deadlines than with community interest.”
