In Barcelona, the World Championship standings took a new turn as more than half of the Grands Prix on the 2020 calendar have already been completed.
Starting from the front row, Fabio Quartararo had a great opportunity to shine this weekend by taking advantage of the poor performance in qualifying of the World Championship leader, Andrea Dovizioso (only 17th). In the third corner, the Italian makes a mistake, taken out by Johan Zarco, who was himself hindered by a move from Petrucci in front of him. A golden opportunity for the Nice native to open up a significant gap in the championship.
Starting cautiously, he gradually overtakes his opponents at the beginning of the race. Aggressive, the young Frenchman attempts a big braking maneuver on Rossi successfully after only a few laps. Continuing his momentum, he even overtakes his teammate who had led the race from the start. Midway through the race, the rider of bike No. 20 tries to pull away, pushing the riders behind him into making mistakes. First, his teammate Morbidelli, who misses at the first corner and allows Rossi to pass him. Then it’s the “Doctor’s” turn to crash out, eight laps from the finish line.
Quartararo then manages the end of his race to secure his third victory in the premier class. Lastly, Morbidelli collapses at the end of the Grand Prix and surrenders the podium to the Suzuki riders, Joan Mir and Alex Rins.
In the standings, Fabio Quartararo regains the lead with an eight-point advantage over the Spaniard Mir and 18 over Viรฑales, who had a disastrous start and an anonymous race.
