Just days before the second round of municipal elections in Nice, the campaign has once again taken a conflictual turn. Between public accusations, legal proceedings and indirect confrontations, the local political climate has deteriorated in recent days. The main protagonists, Éric Ciotti and Christian Estrosi, now oppose each other on the judicial front as well.

As the municipal campaign ends tonight in Nice, the climate remains marked by legal matters. For several weeks, tensions have not subsided. Complaints are multiplying. Public accusations follow one another. The latest episodes involving Christian Estrosi and Éric Ciotti since yesterday have prolonged this dynamic. Less than two days before the election results, the campaign still appears dominated by these disputes, which continue to weigh on the debate.

Yesterday, a new episode shocked observers. During a public gathering, Christian Estrosi allegedly stated that prefect Françoise Souliman had been “fired for corruption.” A defamation complaint has been filed against the outgoing mayor.

This type of statement fuels already strong tension that has weakened the debate. It is a symbol of a campaign no longer limited to a confrontation of projects but to a space for personal attacks.

At the same time, Eric Ciotti’s campaign team also denounced another form of attack. Posters appearing in several neighborhoods and particularly in the Saint-Roch sector have associated candidate Éric Ciotti with terms such as “racism,” “fascism” or “LGBT-phobia.” The tactic targets image rather than program and has resulted in yet another complaint filed against persons unknown for defamation and public insult.

These two situations are not isolated. They are part of a continuum over several weeks. The Nice campaign has been characterized by an accumulation of incidents offering a deleterious climate that resulted in abstention of 46.42%, or more than 100,000 people, largely disillusioned by the sorry spectacle on display.

Social media, anonymity and suspected interference

Another front opened at the same time with the Robin DeNice affair. Christian Estrosi decided to file a complaint against this anonymous activist. The proceedings cite “Cyberstalking, forgery and use of forged documents, and undermining the integrity of the vote.”

The outgoing mayor’s lawyer described a “cyberstalking raven and denounced a massive destabilization operation […] This individual cowardly takes advantage of anonymity to flood social networks with lies and smear campaigns since 2022.” For their part, the defense spoke of organized activity on social media.

These words reflect strong tension against social media, now the favorite playground for candidates to express themselves but also dangerous in the transmission of ideas that go against human rights values. Content disseminated sometimes escapes all control because of the anonymous nature of certain responses. The boundary between political expression and manipulation seems blurred.

A campaign moving away from democratic debate

The first round nevertheless provided a clear framework. Éric Ciotti came first with 43.43% of votes. Christian Estrosi followed with 30.98% while Juliette Chesnel-Le Roux came third with 11.93% of votes. The second round could have refocused discussions on projects for the city. It did not. Only two or three meager press conferences allowed for futilely discussing subjects that are sometimes essential for the city’s future.

This situation raises a simple question. What room remains for a calm debate? Voters are confronted with a succession of controversies. Legal information and public accusations occupy the media space. The risk is real. The substance of the programs takes a back seat.

The Nice municipal campaign gives the image of a picturesque confrontation leading to constantly growing mistrust.

As the second round approaches, one conclusion becomes clear. The campaign has been marked by progressive drift. The latest events are merely the culmination. The election will take place in this context with a result that, whatever it may be, will have little representative value if abstention does not decrease.
