Municipal Elections Nice 2008: News between the two rounds

Latest News

Christian Estrosi had lunch at a restaurant and then held a conference to explain his security program.

Patrick Allemand distinguished himself by calling for a vote for Pierre Laigle in the cantonal elections. Trivial? Not really. Pierre Laigle is supported by Patrick Mottard. Does this constitute the first rapprochement between the two Patricks? Still in Patrick Allemand’s camp, running mate Sophie Duez called on civil society to support the left-wing candidate. She was accompanied by Majid BENHADDOU, Fred ALTMANN, Christian KOSANIC, and Stéphane COLLET.

Jacques Peyrat continued his crusade against Christian Estrosi. “The President of the Republic preferred the incumbent mayor Jean-Claude GAUDIN over the State Secretary candidate Christian ESTROSI for the High-Speed Line and the Union for the Mediterranean […] The President of the Republic decided otherwise by showing his support for Jean-Claude GAUDIN and a route passing through Marseille station rather than a direct route to Nice and Italy. This choice is anything but neutral as it amounts to sacrificing the Côte d’Azur on the altar of the municipal elections in favor of Marseille and Toulon. Without the High-Speed Line, the Côte d’Azur will be sidelined from the major economic exchange flows of the 21st century. Our airport risks saturation and the environmental constraints on air transport will certainly reduce the possibilities of traveling by plane over short and medium distances. All the European metropolises will soon be connected to each other by a vast high-speed railway network. Therefore, there is an urgency for Nice and the Côte d’Azur to join this great network. But the right choices need to be made now to avoid serious disappointments tomorrow! I take note that the President of the Republic’s promise to the ministerial candidate that Nice becomes the French capital of the Union for the Mediterranean has been shelved in favor of Marseille. However, I call on all elected officials and leaders of the Côte d’Azur to mobilize without delay and with all their strength in favor of a ‘Provence Côte d’Azur’ High-Speed Line that will place Nice at the heart of the Mediterranean railway network.”

The list “Nice Citoyenne Et Altermondialiste, 100% on the left, 100% ecological” calls for defeating Estrosi and Peyrat’s right-wing.

“The list ‘Nice Citoyenne Et Altermondialiste, 100% on the left, 100% ecological’ thanks the men and women who gave it their votes and rejoices over the national electoral defeat of the right-wing and the Sarkozy-Fillon-Estrosi government.

For the first time in Nice, a 100% left-wing and 100% ecological list was presented, and allowed the electoral campaign to address themes of active democracy, the refusal of the National Interest Operation aimed at concreting the Var plain, the demand for free transportation, the municipal public management of local services such as water or school canteens, and the necessity of requisitioning empty homes.

These themes will be those of the upcoming mobilizations, in which the men and women of the ‘Nice Citoyenne Et Altermondialiste, 100% on the left, 100% ecological’ list will participate.

For the second round, the list ‘Nice Citoyenne Et Altermondialiste, 100% on the left, 100% ecological’ calls for defeating Peyrat and Estrosi’s right-wing.”

The National Front supports Jacques Peyrat.

Jacques Peyrat receives backing from the National Front. FN candidate Lydia Schénardi, who received 4% of the votes, calls to vote for the incumbent mayor Jacques Peyrat. A significant voting base in the race to catch up with Christian Estrosi’s 15,000-voter lead.
