From October 10 to 19, the city of Nice offers around fifteen events throughout the city to inform, educate, and raise awareness about mental health.
“At all stages of life, my mental health is a right,” is the theme of the 2023 edition of the Mental Health Awareness Weeks. Created in 1990, the goal each year is to raise public awareness and change the perception of psychological disorders.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in four people worldwide will face a mental health problem at some point in their lives.
The city of Nice is participating in this national event and has chosen to focus particularly on children, adolescents, and the elderly. Thus, it offers fifteen events in its territory. On the agenda: conferences, workshops, readings, open houses, shows…
In partnership with entities including the Nice University Hospital, the Sainte Marie Hospital Center, and user associations, the municipality invites you to meet at the libraries, social centers, and associative venues in the city.
Focus on the mental health of seniors and bipolar disorder
Seniors are at the heart of the programming in Nice. On Tuesday, October 10 from 2 p.m. to 4:30 p.m., at the Maison des Associations Garibaldi, a conference titled “Aging Well” led by mental health professionals will aim to demystify these issues that may also exist in the lives of our elders in order to better support them.
In this vein, a moment of debate and exchange around the theme “I am a senior, my mental health is a right!” is scheduled for Thursday, October 12, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Nice Municipal Office for Seniors and from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m. at the Alfred Hart Library, and on Friday, October 13, from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Cimiez Library.
Two events also offer to explore what bipolar disorder really is, a mental illness still subject to many clichés and misconceptions. This chronic mental illness affects between 1 and 2.5% of the population, which is between 650,000 and 1,650,000 people in France.
A public reading of excerpts from the book “Espoirs” written by members of the local Nice association “Le phare des 2 pôles” is organized on Thursday, October 12, at the Moulins Social Center and on Friday, October 13, at the Village Social Center, from 2:30 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. It will be followed by discussions, offering an opportunity to hear testimonies and listen to individuals affected by this disorder.
On Thursday, October 19, the theater performance “Des hauts et des bas” will present scenes from the daily life of a person suffering from bipolar disorders, from 6:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., at the La Ruche Social Center.
