The Lazaret Cave hosts “Hyperphantasia” until January 31 next year.

The prehistoric cave of Lazaret, located at the foot of Mount Boron, is transforming into a work of art. Immersive video art is making an entrance for our greatest pleasure.

The Lazaret cave is an archaeological site dating back to the Paleolithic period, between 130,000 and 170,000 years old. Its discovery took place in 1826 and during excavations in 1950, remnants of the past were found. It is in this atmosphere of a distant time that artist Justine Emard, as part of the 9th edition of the 2023 OVNi festival, immerses us in the fabulous prehistoric period. This event has been open since November 17, 2023, and will run until January 31, 2024.

Artificial Intelligence at the Service of the Artist

Internationally renowned, the visual artist, who received a distinction from the Ministry of Culture in 2023, will rely on artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance her art. The AI has been extensively trained by the artist to generate new, unprecedented images of prehistory. This is based on thousands of images comprising engravings, drawings, and paintings discovered in the Chauvet Cave in Ardèche.

The four video projectors installed in the cave allow you to admire the AI interacting with the natural geology of the cavity. The accompanying soundtrack, which will play while the images are projected, was produced from the recording of sounds emitted by neurons during a brain operation. “Hyperphantasia” is a work that invites contemplation and a journey into the imagination of ancient prehistoric times, in addition to enabling Nice to expand its already abundant artistic heritage.
