“Nice-Airport,” the first bioclimatic train station in Europe planned for 2028

The new Nice Saint-Augustin station will undergo a complete transformation to host, starting in 2028, a rather unique project. What can we expect?ย

When unveiling the model of the future “Nice Airport” at the end of last week, Christian Estrosi and Marlรจne Dolveck (General Director of SNCF Gares & Connexions) did not mince words. Described as the first bioclimatic station in Europe, according to the municipality, it has been designed to address major environmental challenges.

The mayor of Nice praises the merits of a station equipped with “total and unique intermodality, firstly, between the airport, the delivered tramway lines as well as the future line 4, metropolitan and regional buses, the cycling network, and park-and-ride facilities.”

This is followed by a high-level architecture meeting ecological performance standards, specifically “an energy-producing, low-carbon station, with extensively greened areas to combat heat islands,” not to mention accessibility that is “ergonomic, functional, and open to the neighborhood.”

The station in a few figuresย

The future station will span over 4,000 mยฒ of built-up area, including 1,500 mยฒ of shops and services to the delight of travelers. Additionally, there will be 4,200 mยฒ of landscaped areas, comprising 90 trees and 300 shrubs.

600 megawatts of photovoltaic energy production will complement the project, along with 700 car parking spaces paired with 900 bicycle parking spaces, providing more mobility options.

Before launching such a project, the city will have to deal with the construction of the West exit of the Mathis road, which seems to have stalled since work began in 2021, but whose completion promises to be near.
