Nice Carnival: Stop the Paranoia!

Latest News

For the record: On July 7, 2005, four explosions hit London’s public transport system, resulting in 56 deaths and 700 injuries. In the days following, it was discovered that these were committed by four young British Islamist terrorists.

Queen Elizabeth II of the United Kingdom declared: “Such atrocities strengthen our sense of community, our humanity, our confidence in the rule of law. They will not change our way of life.”

No one knows who came up with the “lunar” idea of questioning the implementation of the Nice Carnival schedule, which is set to begin in a week, on February 13.

Fortunately, the mayor of Nice, Christian Estrosi, put an end to this rumor: “There is no question of canceling the carnival, all security measures have been taken.”

But how can anyone even think of “putting on hold” a popular event because terrorists or mindless individuals (the Nice Coulibaly seems to belong more to this second category) have made it their mission to fight “infidels” who are merely phantoms of their sick imagination?

If we fell into this trap, it would be their victory, even more than killing or injuring one or more people. Because their true objective, at least for those who inspire and use them as pawns, is to sow doubt, create fear, disrupt our way of life, and thus pit us against each other!

Granted, the cynicism of political life means some irresponsible individuals play the role of arsonists-firefighters. We’ve seen this before!

But while we must be firm and vigilant, we should not succumb to paranoia: the actions or plans of madmen or terrorists can harm us, even severely.

But we must “maintain the rule of law and our way of life” as the Queen of England said. They represent our moral superiority, which we must never renounce, because it is this, even more than all vigilance plans, that will ensure light triumphs over darkness.

Viva Carnival!
