Nice celebrates its Santa Capellina

Latest News

In the pure tradition of Nice, the hat makers will once again gather for the Santa Capellina festival.

First up, on Saturday, April 29, there will be drinks and a street meal served by the famous Nice canteen “piedanlepla” starting at 2 PM on Saint Augustin Square located near the Providence Theatre in Old Nice.

As the Santacapellinians say, “Bring your ideas, your stuff, and come make a pretty head at the Santa!”

Secondly, Monday, May 1st will be the celebration of hat-makers… who, as every year, will be in full swing on the Place des Cadrans Solaires, opposite the Rauba Capeu War Memorial (seaside between Old Nice and the port) starting at noon. The rules of this festival are simple: Bring a fish and wear a hat made with your own hands.

Next, we proceed to the preparation of the big fish soup, which will be followed by a procession with the Saint (in which everyone inserts their wishes) through the alleys of Old Nice, accompanied by Batucada and brass bands. Finally, we set it afloat and then it’s magical. It sails on the waves until… very, very far away. Some claim to have seen it in Sardinia last summer!

A little tip from a regular: buy your fish on Sunday because it will be difficult to find an open fishmonger.
