A first major mark of recognition for its transport policy. Results to follow in Genoa on November 3rd. The city of Nice is the only French community to have been selected.

The Urban Community of Nice Côte d’Azur has just been selected by the Eurocities network (a network founded in 1986 bringing together more than 120 European cities in 30 countries) for the Eurocities prize, category “Innovation”, alongside two major cities: Berlin and Rotterdam.

The objective of the Eurocities network is to engage in constructive dialogues with the European Union institutions on a large number of common themes, such as urban development, transport and mobility, the environment, public services, culture, etc.

This selection is a first mark of recognition for the ambitious and innovative public transport policy in the Nice Côte d’Azur area.

The urban community of Nice Côte d’Azur offers its population, both urban and rural, a unified, convenient, intelligent, and affordable public transport system, contributing to strengthening the spirit of cohesion and territorial equity in a shared urban and rural space through:

– The pooling of its own intra-urban transport system “lignes d’Azur” with the inter-urban departmental managed by the Council of the Alpes-Maritimes “Transports Alpes Maritimes-TAM”;
– A single ticket at €1 (single Azur ticket) on all bus lines (100 lines, 600 vehicles, 15 million kilometers per year) and tramway (1 tram line in Nice);
– An “Azur Card” subscription system that allows traveling for €1 on all departmental networks.
– The development of ticketing and access to passenger information via NFC.

From November 2nd to 5th, the annual general assembly of the Eurocities 2011 network will take place in Genoa with the theme “Planning for people”, that is to say, urban planning at the service of citizens.

On this occasion, on November 3rd, three prestigious prizes will be awarded to three cities, one winning city in each of the following categories:

– Innovation
– Participation
– Cooperation

The evaluation criteria will revolve around the impact of operations conducted on the quality of daily life of citizens, its exemplary nature in the territory.

The jury will be composed of academics, representatives from the city of Genoa, the Eurocities executive committee, and journalists.
