The bilingual play “The XVth Corps in the First World War” will be performed by 9th-grade students from Port Lympia Middle School this Thursday, April 17th, as part of the Centenary commemoration. Nicknamed the “Great War” by those who experienced it, it painfully marked the entry of Europe and the world into the 20th century.
The Nice academy is fully participating in this event and is committed to passing on the history and memories of this conflict to younger generations.
11 9th-grade students from Port Lympia Middle School participated in the project “The XVth Corps in the First World War” with their history and Occitan/Nissart teachers.
Since the beginning of the school year, students have dedicated two hours a week to this project, which aims to create a bilingual play (French/Occitan). The project began in September 2013 around the architecture and study of several war memorials: Rauba Capèu in Nice, those of Moulinet and Peille.
Students have explored the investment of people from the South and Nice in the First World War and the visible traces left in nearby or more distant communes. The students questioned the affair of the XVth Corps, its treatment in the media and public opinion…
From October to January 2014, the students studied several works. In November, students and teachers chose the title of the show “The One I Prefer, o sia la fachenda dóu XVen cors,” and worked on dialogue, staging, the poster, the program, and the soundtrack.
It is worth noting that since the 6th grade, these same students have been taking the Occitan option and each year produce an original creation at the Francis Gag Municipal Theater.
